According to Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, skin disorder is the external manifestation of internal body dysfunctions. Therefore, identifying and correcting the internal root cause is the key to successfully treating any skin disorder. In order to eliminate Eczema completely and prevent any future recurrence, a good treatment should involve treating both the symptoms (itchiness, pain, redness, swelling, dryness, and scaling, etc.), as well as the underlying internal body dysfunction.

What is Eczema?
Eczema is a type of inflammatory skin disorder that is pruritic and recurrent. The skin lesion is pleomorphic and symmetrical. “Eczema” actually refers to an entire class of skin diseases. Atopic Dermatitis is one of these diseases. Because it is the most common one, it is simply referred to as “eczema” by the public. Symptoms include itchiness, redness, swelling, dryness, scaling, or even bleeding and pain. There are three phases of eczema: acute, subacute, and chronic. Eczema can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender.
What damages can be caused by Eczema?
Your skin is the largest organ in your body. It is elastic and waterproof. It is the first line of defense that protects our body from the external environment. Its major functions include insulation, sensation, temperature regulation, absorption, and excretion. Healthy skin can usually heal on its own. However, skin affected by eczema is usually dry and cracked, damaging its self-healing ability and its barrier function, which makes it more vulnerable to inflammations. Scratching due to the itchiness further damages the skin, allowing bacteria to enter and causing more severe inflammatory reaction. The itchiness worsens, and patient continues to scratch harder. This process becomes an “itch – scratch – itch” vicious cycle. Due to the recurring nature of Eczema, skin gets damaged through this vicious cycle repeatedly, and gradually weakening the self-healing and self-protect function of the skin further. Over time, this can lead to problems including pain, skin discolouration, lichenification (skin thickening), and loss of normal elasticity of the skin. Other than the damages to the skin, eczema can also affect your sleep, and lead to stress or depression. It can impact your daily activity and lower the quality of life.
Why is it difficult to heal by itself?
Both Western Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine believe that, instead of external factors, the root cause of Eczema is still from the body itself. This means that Eczema cannot be eliminated by simply avoiding contact with certain substances. In addition, due to the nature of Eczema, your skin gets damaged repeatedly, continuing in weakening its self-healing ability barrier function. Since your skin is the first line of defense, this also impacts the general health of your body, making it more difficult to heal by itself.
How to deal with children suffering from Eczema?
It is particularly important to properly handle childhood eczema since it can cause more damages to children. Children has more delicate and sensitive skin. Severe itchiness caused by eczema will make children scratch unconsciously. It is more difficult for younger children to suppress their scratching impulses. However, scratching does not stop itchiness; on the contrary, scratching will irritate skin further and worsen the situation. The skin may become cracked, bleed, and get infected, which is more likely to happen because of children’s weaker immune system. Therefore, it is important to maintain a hygienic environment for children with eczema, avoid contact with irritants (such as detergents, synthetic fibers, etc.), diligently clip nails, and keep them from scratching themselves. Distract children during flare-ups. One can try to cover the itchy areas with cool, moist towels to relieve some itchiness. It is a good idea to consult with your family doctor or specialist for treatment options as early as possible. Herbal therapy can be a very good option, because it is effective, brings results quickly, and at same time, it is also safe, natural, non-toxic, and has no side effects.
Common Western Medicine Eczema treatments?
In Western Medicine, the reason of getting Eczema is currently unknown. Most researchers believe that the actual cause is a complicated one, and is most likely a combination of many factors that are related to the immune system. Because of this uncertainty, there is currently no cure for Eczema in Western Medicine. Instead, treatment principle for Eczema focuses on relieving and controlling the symptoms (mainly the itchiness) during flare-ups with medications. The most common methods are the use of steroid creams and oral intake of antihistamines. TCI is a relatively newer choice of medication for eczema started in recent years.
Steroid Cream: | Topical form of glucocorticoid or corticosteroid, a class of steroid hormones; works to reduce inflammation by suppressing the immune system; anti-inflammation drug. |
Antihistamine: | Medication for allergies; works by neutralizing the effects of histamine, which causes redness, edema, and itching. |
TCI: | Topical drug, works to suppress the immune system by blocking the activation of T-cells to reduce inflammation. |
